Tips for Your Trip to Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is a destination that many people dream of visiting. However, due to a lack of information, a dream trip can turn into a nightmare. Follow these tips to make your trip to Machu Picchu an unforgettable experience.

  • Consider the season in which you visit Machu Picchu. The best time to go is during the dry season (April to October). In contrast, the rainy season (November to March) is not recommended due to frequent heavy showers, especially for those planning adventure activities like trekking, as it can be very dangerous. However, there is an alternative route by car, which is not affected by the weather, but we still recommend visiting during the dry season.
  • When you arrive in Cusco, rest for at least a couple of hours to allow your body to adjust to the altitude. After that, you can explore nearby sites such as San Blas, the Plaza de Armas, the Twelve-Angle Stone, and Qoricancha. If you want to venture further, visit Sacsayhuamán.
  • A good guide makes a difference in a great tour. Keep in mind that you will receive a lot of information in a short period. Ask for recommendations on the most charismatic guides (if traveling in a group, you can request one, as there is some flexibility in this regard). Our agency works with excellent guides.
  • Visit all the physical tourist sites first, and then explore the city’s museums. This way, you will better understand the explanations and learn more.
  • If you plan to hike the Inca Trail, you must be in excellent physical condition and have the appropriate gear and equipment. It is not recommended for children or elderly people. Additionally, during the rainy season, the trail becomes extremely dangerous. It is best to do the Inca Trail during the dry season. However, some travelers prefer the rainy season because it is cooler and the scenery is more lush.
  • When in Ollantaytambo, wear sunglasses to protect yourself from gusts of wind and dust.
  • Always wear comfortable, lightweight sportswear. Keep a sweater or jacket on hand at all times, as the weather can change quickly—from rain to heat to cold.
  • Bring insect repellent, as Machu Picchu is located at the edge of the Peruvian jungle.
  • Machu Picchu is not an ideal place to bring young children.
  • Keep in mind that not all train services to Machu Picchu are the same. There is a significant difference in their categories. From Cusco, you will need to travel by car for about 30 minutes before boarding the train to Machu Picchu, which takes approximately four hours. Depending on the class of train you choose (check with your travel agency), an economy-class trip may feel uncomfortable, whereas a superior-class trip offers an extremely comfortable and first-class service.
  • Your travel agency should coordinate all transportation connections before and after the train ride. If not planned in advance, you may waste a lot of time and money trying to find transportation in the area.
  • Once at Machu Picchu, everything is more expensive. If you need to buy water, accessories, or any other items, do so in Aguas Calientes before heading up.
  • The mountain next to Machu Picchu, called Huayna Picchu (where the famous Machu Picchu photos are taken), is very dangerous and should only be climbed by experienced hikers. Visitors must sign a liability waiver acknowledging that neither the park nor any other entity is responsible for accidents due to the high risk and difficult access. It is strongly advised not to climb this mountain during the rainy season, even for experienced climbers.
